Green: vocab flashcards, verb-conjugation drills, “is this sentence grammatical?” Red: translate-and-submit. Language acquisition is the neurological process of struggling to retrieve a word and eventually finding it. If the AI retrieves it, the neural pathway doesn’t form. This is one place where the shortcut is not a shortcut — it’s a detour that never ends.
Science
Green: concept explainer, “why do we control for X in this experiment?”, diagram walkthroughs. Red: lab-report generator, hypothesis-invention, results-fabrication. Lab reports are meant to train the muscle of describing what you actually saw. If the AI describes it, your kid never learns to observe.
History & Social Studies
Green: summarising primary sources (with fact-checking), “what were the main arguments on both sides of X?”, timeline scaffolding. Red: treating AI as a source of facts. This is where hallucinations bite hardest — AI confidently invents dates, quotes, and even entire people. The rule for history assignments: any “fact” the AI gives you gets verified in a real source before it enters the paper.
Coding
Green: “explain what this loop does,” “why is my code throwing this error?”, pair-programming on a concept. Here’s the paragraph most articles about AI and homework skip, and it’s the one that reframes the whole conversation. The point of homework is not the artifact your kid hands in. It’s the struggle.
Cognitive scientist Robert Bjork calls this desirable difficulty. The learning happens in the retrieval, the wrong turn, the effortful search for the right word, the second attempt at the sentence. A homework assignment that’s frictionless is a homework assignment that didn’t teach anything — the kid produced the artifact without producing the neural pathway.

If your kid is being asked to produce a piece of work that, without AI, would take twelve hours of research and writing at a level well above their year, something has gone wrong with the assignment design. That’s not your kid’s problem to solve; it’s the teacher’s. Frame the email as curious, not accusatory: “Can you help me understand how a student without AI would approach this? I want to make sure my daughter is doing it the way you intend.”
AI use is banned but the peer pressure is overwhelming.
