Free chore app comparison: Family Checklist's free week chart next to the free versions of Chorsee and Joon

Almost every free chore app is free to download. Far fewer stay free once you add your second child, your fourth chore or the day the trial ends. We set up the same parent and two kids in four popular chore apps and wrote down exactly where each free version stops, so you can pick one that stays free for your family.

How we tested. From October 2 to 8, 2026 we used Family Checklist, Chorsee and Joon on one Android phone, installed from Google Play, with a parent, Alex, and two kids, Emma and Leo. For Neat Kid, which needs a Google or Apple sign-in, we used a test Google account. We bought nothing. Family Checklist is our app, so we put it first; every price, limit and screen below is what the apps showed on our test phone or in their store listings.

The short answer

  • Family Checklist stays free with no time limit for three family members with three tasks each, needs no sign-up, and prints this week's chart free.
  • Chorsee is free up to ten chores for the whole family, with points; custom rewards and notes are paid.
  • Joon and Neat Kid push Premium early: Joon showed its $89.99-a-year offer again when we reopened it; Neat Kid is free for one child, with rewards locked.

Where Each Free Version Stops

Family Checklist

Chorsee: creating custom rewards requires a premium subscription
Chorsee

Both show the limit on screen. Family Checklist keeps three tasks per member free for good.

Family Checklist gives each family member three tasks and keeps that free with no trial clock. Free covers any three people: you and two kids, or two parents and a child. A fourth person, or the chart on a second phone, is Premium. A fourth task shows a Premium crown instead of disappearing. Chorsee counts chores for the whole family, ten in total, and asks for Plus for custom rewards, notes, subtasks and photo proof. Joon showed a full-screen $89.99-a-year offer right after sign-up. Neat Kid is free for the first child only: adding a second child or any reward opened its Premium screen.

Opening the app on an ordinary day

Later in the week, Family Checklist opened straight to the family's chart. Joon opened to its yearly offer first; closing it let us in.

Adding a second child

Family Checklist took Leo as a second child, and a parent, without asking for money. In Neat Kid, "Add Kid Profile" opened the Premium screen.

A free app you have to fight with is not free. Family Checklist and Chorsee both work without an account: Chorsee through guest mode, Family Checklist from the first screen. Family Checklist sets up from a list of ready tasks with icons in about a minute. Joon starts with an account and a questionnaire about each child, including suspected diagnoses; Neat Kid starts with a Google or Apple sign-in.

Many younger kids follow a paper chart on the fridge more easily than an app on a parent's phone. Family Checklist prints the family's week as a PDF on the free version; next weeks and stickers are Premium. If you only want paper, see how to keep a paper chore chart going all school year, and app vs printable chore chart explains when to use which.

When Another Free App Fits Better

Free is only free if it fits your family. Chorsee's free version suits three or more kids, or kids with more than three chores each: its ten chores are shared by the whole family, with any number of children. Neat Kid's free version fits one young child; it covers the first child's profile, and its App Store page describes it for ages 5 to 8. Family Checklist fits a parent and two kids with up to three tasks each, and it is the only one of the four where we found a free printable chart.

When to Pay, and for What

Upgrade when the free version stops fitting, not before. With Family Checklist that is a fourth task per person or a fourth family member, family sync to the kids' own devices, or printing the next weeks; it costs $29.99 a year or $49.99 once. Chorsee Plus is from $39.99 a year or from $119.99 once and mostly adds rewards and detail. Joon's $89.99 a year buys its pet game, which some kids need and many don't. For the full picture of each, see our Joon app review and the Chorsee vs Neat Kid comparison.

Whatever you choose, start small: three tasks per child, the same time every day. Our morning routine guide, chores for 5-year-olds and chores for 8-year-olds help you pick them, and how long habits really take explains why week two matters.
